What is Computer Engineering

EngineeringComputer engineering has become a popular field for seniors looking at their college options. Job demand is high, growth is expected to continue climbing, and salaries are far above the national average for new workers holding computer engineering degrees. If you are among the thousands considering gaining your computer engineering degree, you will most likely want to look at the best college programs in the nation for help in choosing the colleges to whom you apply.

Viewing colleges and universities that offer graduate school programs, as well as those who do not have graduate school programs, you may be surprised at the list of computer engineering colleges that make the top five list in the U.S. News & World Report magazine.

First on the list is Massachusetts’ MIT. MIT is continually ranked as the best school for any engineering, including computer engineering, program. Tuition at MIT is a little higher at $35,000 per year, but if you hold an MIT computer engineering degree, job offers are often much higher than average starting wages. Room and board adds another $10,000 to this rate. Also in the East, New York's Cooper Union offers an exceptional program for $33,000 per year.

California's Stanford University is also on the list of best computer engineering colleges. Stanford's tuition is comparable to MIT’s. Students should be aware that Stanford is extremely selective when it comes to accepting students, so you must work hard to keep your advanced math and science grades up while in high school. Another California college makes the list.

University of California's Berkeley campus is more affordable for computer engineering students with tuition rates of $8,300 per year for in-state students and $27,450 per year for out-of-state students. Adding room and board boosts these tuition rates by about $14,000, but usually students can be quite masterful at finding alternate housing solutions. Finally, Harvey Mudd College in California carries tuitions of $35,000 and $12,000 for room and board (per year.) While Harvey Mudd College does not offer doctorate programs, the computer engineering program for bachelor and masters degrees is exceptional.
