Usually, the term systems engineering immediately evokes visions of IBM, one of the leading computer processing corporations in today's world. Systems engineering takes a customers need/needs and then creates a product developed solely to meet their demands. With systems engineering, engineers must adapt well to change and be willing to use trial and error methods while tweaking small aspects of their design. Those involved in systems engineering keep detailed records of their designs from start to finish so that they can patent their design for future use.
The cycle of any systems engineering project starts with the request. From this customer or managerial request, a systems engineering team will get together and brainstorm the requirements needed to create this product. Once they have a plan of action, the team will develop the product, testing it frequently along the way. If their product fails, they return to the drawing board and come up with changes or a whole new product. Eventually, the systems engineering team comes up with a product that works in test studies. From here, they create a small batch of their product and test it in different environments to ensure that all items are solid and do not fail. If the item needs tweaking, the systems engineering professionals will again make changes before putting the item into production.
Systems engineering does not have a specific college program. Usually, those who wish to become involved in systems engineering will get their degree in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering and take electives in computer engineering to increase knowledge in the computer systems that they might end up working with on a daily basis. Because electrical engineering is a less popular college program with many of today's students, the need for qualified electrical engineers is strong. Providing you enjoy math, science, and computers, this can be an excellent college path to follow. The money is excellent, and there are many companies seeking skilled workers.
